Overnight rain and a consistent drizzle today morning delayed the start of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground. (Watch)
Unravelling the mystery of new spin sensation Ajantha Mendis will be the biggest challenge for India's famed batsmen as they go into the first Test against Sri Lanka, seeking to achieve the rare feat of conquering the islanders at home.
Batting has been India's strength in recent years and it is no different this time around as the team has plenty of experience in that department. Indians had lost a three-match Test series 2-1 on their last Test tour of Sri Lanka in 2001.
While the Sri Lankans have a formidable spin combination, the pace attack looks severely depleted by injuries to frontline pacers. Thilan Thushara and Nuwan Kulasekera will share the new ball responsibility with old war horse Chaminda Vaas.

The first Test of Sri Lanka vs India will be held on 23 July, 2008 at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo in Sri Lanka. One of the strongest team of the sub-continent Sri Lanka, last visited India to play a three matches Test series when India was hosted and won the series by 2-0. On the other hand Sri Lanka has a good winning statistics in the last three Test series where South Africa, Bangladesh and England were the opposition teams. It was 2005/06 season when they visited India and lost the series. The important thing is that the winning rate of the both teams, India is in the steps a head.
The first Test will be commenced on 23 July just after one day. According to the Local time it is half an hour first that IST. At 10:00AM of local time the first test venue will be full of thousand of cricket fans of both teams at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.
The second Test of the forthcoming series will be grounded on 31 Jul 2008 at Galle International Stadium, the popular play ground of Sri Lanka. Similarly, the match will be held on 10:00AM and according to GMT it will be 05:00AM.
With the third and final Test match the Test series will come to end with the match of R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
This is the 10th stage, where Sri Lanka and India is going to play their Test series and the 5th stage form 1982/83 season, when India is visiting Sri Lanka. India fist visited Sri Lanka in 1985 and played three matches. Sri Lanka secured the series victory of 1-0 and the time in 2001 Sri Lanka got victory by 2-1 of three. On the other hands India also got two victories and one series came drawn. So it is clear that Sri Lanka a real lion in it home gourd. The important thing is that it is ST Jayasuriya who secured 340 run and achieved record and the total runs was 952. Most probably, it was the highest run in an innings. After 10 years Sri Lanka and ST Jayasuriya is coming to face each other.
The forthcoming Test series named as Idea Cup cricket series. Idea is one the Cellular company of India, secured the title sponsorship. Aditya Birla Group, the owner of Idea Cellular, has got the sponsorship first time. That is why they are proud of. Ten Sports will telecast the matches with English Commentary, and Tony Greig, Ian Bishop, Ranjith Fernando and Arun Lal declared in the commentary control panel. Beside the English commentary Zee Sports will telecast the test series live with Hindi commentary.
Beside this electronic media, digital media-internet media also telecast the Idea Cup Test series live in various way, such as text commentary, ball by ball, full and short scoreboard with flash and texts. 3D animation and Video streaming has got popularity in the for the high speed internet service. IP TV or Internet live TV will show the matches live too.
The Indian Test team has been in form over the last couple of years but the task before them over the next three weeks is a huge one. Sri Lanka are a formidable team at home - since India's last tour in 2001, the Sri Lankans have won 11 out of 14 series, losing only to Australia and Pakistan, and drawing a two-match series against New Zealand.
It's been seven years since India's last Test series here, but the settled nature of both teams means many of the protagonists are the same. A couple of Indians who missed out in 2001 could have huge roles to play this time: Anil Kumble is the leader of the team and the bowling attack, while Sachin Tendulkar continues to be the key man in the middle order and is within touching distance of becoming the highest run-scorer in Test cricket.
Sri Lanka's successes at home have largely been built around the simple strategy of steady run-accumulation and a relentless diet of high-quality spin bowling. They have the resources for both in this series: the opening pair is inexperienced, but Sri Lanka have plenty of class in the middle order, while Ajantha Mendis lends a touch of mystery to their spin attack.
