Live cricket score of England vs South Africa 3rd ODI in nPower Series 2008 | Watch Cricket Scorecard

Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, is miss the third one-dayer against England on Friday after failing to recover from a tennis elbow problem that has troubled him through the first two matches. South Africa are trailing 2-0 in the five-match series and Smith's likely absence puts them under further pressure as they look to avoid a series defeat at The Oval. The team was bowled out for 83 in the second match at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. If Smith would not play then Jacques Kallis captain of match, he stood down from the vice-captaincy last year after being omitted from the ICC World Twenty20 squad. He has since said he would help the team in case of an emergency, while Mark Boucher added that the senior players would have to step up if South Africa wanted to come back into the series.

Live cricket score of India vs Sri Lanka 5th ODI in Idea Cup 2008 | Watch Cricket Scorecard

Few would have bet on India winning their maiden one-day series in Sri Lanka with a game in hand, especially after they were thrashed twice in a row, first in the Asia Cup final in Pakistan and then in the opening game of this series, with their bogeyman from the Test series, Ajantha Mendis, being the tormentor on both occasions.

The difference lay in the abilities of the two batting orders to adapt. While the Indian batsmen huffed and puffed to victory in the second ODI before adjusting to post defendable totals in Colombo, their Sri Lankan counterparts repeatedly failed to cope with India's three-pronged pace attack backed up by Harbhajan Singh. The success of India's bowlers, and Sri Lanka's collective batting failure, makes the final a dead rubber.

Live cricket score of England vs South Africa 2nd ODI in nPower Series 2008 | Watch Cricket Scorecard

England made a useful start to the one-dayers with a win after losing the Test series to South Africa, who had started favourites to take the one-dayers, too. Kevin Pietersen, who has collected two Man-of-the-Match awards in his two matches as captain, is now looking forward to the return of the man he replaced as leader of the one-day side, as Paul Collingwood comes back after his four-match ban for Tuesday's day-nighter at Trent Bridge. Pietersen already has Collingwood's backing: "He's had a fantastic start. He's gone out there wanting the captaincy and already he's making really good decisions. Hopefully he will go from strength to strength, he's learning all the time." Meanwhile, South Africa will be keen to level the series and are hoping - however unlikely - that the Morkel brothers will be fit to return.

Live cricket score of India vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI in Idea Cup 2008 | Watch Cricket Scorecard

Having put the pressure on the hosts with two consecutive wins, India is likely to retain the winning combination when they go into the fourth cricket one dayer against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday seeking to clinch the series by taking an unassailable 3-1 lead.

After being thrashed in the first match in Dambulla, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his young bravehearts have tilted the scale in their favour with two close wins and need just one more triumph to record a rare overseas series win.

Although the Indians have been quite sloppy on the field with a number of dropped catches, the two victories will no doubt serve as a morale booster as they gear up for another floodlit contest at the R Premadasa stadium.

India look to wrap up Idea Cup 2008 ODI series

The islanders, on the other hand, have no option but to win the game to stay afloat in the five-match series.

The track at the Premadasa stadium did provide some assistance to the bowlers which means that the game could turn out to be another low-scoring affair.

The two rival captains - Dhoni and Mahela Jayawardene - did prove that batting was not all that difficult on this pitch with heroic knocks and it remains to be seen whether the other batsmen show the necessary application.

Dhoni had won the important toss in the last two games and may again opt to bat first, when the wicket is at its best, if luck favours him again.

The visitors would need to work on taking catches under lights in case they have to field second, besides avoiding needless run outs.

The Indian team had a good practice session at the nets on Monday trying to plug the gaps ahead of the match in which Sri Lankans are expected to come out with all guns blazing to equalise the series before going for the final on Friday.

Though there were contributions from a few batsmen to take India to a challenging total of 237 in the third match, the Indian camp is worried about Yuvraj Singh's form.

Yuvraj Singh was promoted in the batting order in the last game so that he could settle down before Sri Lankan skipper Jayawardene introduced the vicious spinners, but it did not work.

As far as sloppy throws and catching are concerned, Indian captain Dhoni said the colourful attire of the crowd get camouflaged with the lights and the colour of the ball when it got dirty.

"At times we see the fielders not really reacting or we see a late reaction. It is tough. But you cannot really do anything about it. Your concentration level has to be up all the time. It is very draining but that is what international cricket is all about", Dhoni said.

Despite his heroic effort in guiding India to a decent total by scoring a precious 76 runs, Dhoni attributed the victory to team effort and said he would prefer it this way in the coming matches as well.

The tourists are also happy about the way they handled the mystery bowler Ajantha Mendis though the army man got away with three wickets including two in the slog overs.

India's batting reputation has been at stake from the very beginning after they had failed to read Mendis and Muralitharan.

Barring Gautam Gambhir, who advised his team mates to read the mystery bowler's finger, none of them could gauge Mendis.

The Indian captain has adopted a positive approach of trying to take on the Sri Lankan bowlers head on and to score the maximum runs.

Though the toss has proved to be vital in the first three ODI's, nevertheless the Indian team is working hard to be able to face greater pressure.

Dhoni will also depend a great deal on the part time spinners Like Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the absence of Virender Sehwag to substitute for the fifth specialist bowler.

Teams (from):

India: M S Dhoni (capt), Subramaniam Badrinath, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Zaheer Khan, R P Singh and Parthiv Patel.

Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Chamara Kapugedera, Chamara Silva, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chaminda Vaas, Thilan Thushara, Nuwan Kulasekera, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Mahela Udawatte, Dilhara Fernando, Jehan Mubarak and Malinda Warnapura.

South Africa deals blow to ICC Champions Trophy

South Africa dealt a body blow to next month's ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan on Friday by withdrawing from the tournament for safety and security reasons.

Despite assurances from an International Cricket Council (ICC) task force that acceptable security measures would be in place, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said it is not prepared to send a team to Pakistan.

However CSA president Norman Arendse said in a statement he hoped the ICC would be able to re-schedule the eight-nation tournament due to be held from September 12-28.

Sri Lanka are the designated replacement hosts although ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said on Tuesday it was now too late to switch the competition.

Australia, New Zealand and England players have also expressed concerns about security in Pakistan after a spate of suicide bombings. In the latest incident, 67 people were killed in a suicide bombing on Thursday outside a defence industry complex 30 km northwest of Islamabad.

The ICC executive board will meet on Sunday to make a final decision on the fate of the tournament.

"We know of Cricket South Africa's decision and we will not be making any further comment until the ICC board has discussed Champions Trophy related issues on Sunday," an ICC spokesman said.

Arendse said CSA had reached its decision after extensive discussions and "a frank exchange of views" with the ICC task force headed by Lorgat, a former South Africa selector.

South African Cricketers' Association chief executive Tony Irish welcomed the decision.

"There is nothing more important than the safety of our national team," he said.

Last week an ICC delegation met Cricket Australia plus national captain Ricky Ponting and vice-captain Michael Clarke.

The Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) has told its members that Pakistan is not safe to tour and also expressed concerns about Sri Lanka.

An ACA spokeswoman said the players' union would wait for the ICC to makes its decision on Sunday.

Indian Cricket League News - Ahmedabad, new addition to ICL cricket

Ahmedabad is being added to the Indian Cricket League's (ICL) playing grounds for the season beginning October, according to ICL Executive Board Member Kiran More.

"Some big names in cricket will join the ICL shortly. We are close to clinching the deal and an announcement can be expected in a week," the former test cricket told reporters here last night.

"We will have one more team as well this season," he disclosed.

Besides Ahmedabad, matches would be held this season in Hyderabad, Panchkula and Gurgaon, he added.

"We want to show to the world that we have an upper hand in cricketing merit," he said, expressing hope the youngsters playing ICL would get a chance for playing for the country as well.

"With eminent personalities like Mithun Chakraborty (Royal Bengal Tigers stakeholder) and now Vishnu Manchu aligning with the ICL, it's my full confidence and unshakeable belief that ICL would play an important role in strengthening domestic Indian cricket," he added.

Hyderabad heroes website www.hyderabadheroes.com was also launched on the occasion.

Live cricket score of England vs South Africa 1st ODI from Headingley

For those considering the 1st ODI between England & South Africa, this preview would suggest it's likely the two sides will be fairly equally matched, although England's poor form against the Kiwis should mean South Africa will be viewed as slight favourites in the ODI cricket. If England are to claim a series-opening win, much will depend on the form of big-hitters like Pietersen, Ian Bell and Owais Shah, who top scored in the final two games against New Zealand in June, while Andrew Flintoff's return should also mean. South Africa were last in one-day international action in March when they managed a convincing 3-0 victory over Bangladesh but England should provide a much sterner test.

India survive scare, beat Sri Lanka by 3 wickets

India went through several anxious moments before registering a three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a low-scoring second One-Day International in Dambulla, on Wednesday.

Pacers Zaheer Khan (4 for 21) and Praveen Kumar (3 for 24) ripped through Sri Lanka's batting to bundle them out for a paltry 142 in 38.3 overs before the Indians also recovered from a top-order slump to cruise home with 10.2 overs to spare.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (39) played a pivotal role, batting cautiously to help India overhaul the target and make amends for the humiliating eight-wicket thrashing in the first one-dayer at the same venue on Monday.

Dhoni, who has now taken up the role of finisher, was bowled by Dilhara Fernando with India needing only eight runs for victory. But the small target still seemed quite daunting as the visitors lost the wicket of Harbhajan Singh before S Badrinath (27 not out) hit the winning stroke much to the delight of his teammates.

Chasing Sri Lanka's modest target, the Indians plunged into trouble straightaway and were reduced to a precarious 16 for 2 within five overs, makeshift opener Irfan Pathan (5) and Suresh Raina (1) returning to the pavilion cheaply.

The going got tough for the visitors as Virat Kohli (37), Yuvraj Singh (20) and Rohit Sharma (0) also perished in quick succession, leaving India's hopes in tatters.

Paceman Nuwan Kulasekara provided the early breakthroughs for Sri Lanka, accounting for Pathan and Raina, while Thilina Tushara also chipped in with two wickets in his first spell.

With the Indians reeling at 75 for five, captain Dhoni and S Badrinath, drafted into the team in place of an indisposed Gautam Gambhir, steadied the innings by batting sensibly on a track that provided assistance to the pace bowlers.

Dhoni was content in curbing his natural strokeplay and kept the scoreboard moving with gentle nudges and pushes. He found good support from Badrinath, who looked quite composed at the middle.

As the duo took the score closer to the victory target, Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was forced to turn to his spin trump cards, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, to break the partnership.

The teams will now travel to Colombo, where the third match will be played at the Premadasa stadium on Sunday.

Although Dhoni and Badrinath saw the team through, the victory was far from convincing as the top order of the batting again fell apart.

Earlier, Dhoni invited the Sri Lankans to bat first, and the pace duo of Zaheer and Praveen Kumar backed his decision in fantastic fashion.

Left-arm paceman Zaheer triggered the Lankan collapse by clean bowling Kumar Sangakkara off the last ball of his first over.

Sangakkara's lazy waft without movement cost him dearly as the ball landed outside the off stump, seamed back and rattle his stumps.

Zaheer followed it up with the wickets of Jayawardene (2) and Chamara Kapugedara (0) before Praveen dismissed Chamara Silva (0).

Sri Lanka never recovered from the early blows and, to rub salt on their wounds, Zaheer scalped explosive opener Sanath Jayasuriya (13), leaving the hosts reeling at 33 for five.

Zaheer kept troubling the Lankans with good pace and a teasing line and length while Praveen tested the hosts, his swinging deliveries often inducing edges.

Runs were hard to come against such a disciplined attack and the hosts reached the 50-run mark only after 21.2 overs.

Out-of-form Irfan Pathan tasted his first success when Tillakaratne Dilshan (16) pulled a short-of-length delivery in the air. Debutant Badrinath ran as fast as his legs could carry him and held a good diving catch to make it 44 for six.

It required a special effort to reach a respectable total and a 74-run seventh-wicket partnership between Thilan Thushara and Nuwan Kulasekara helped avoid a complete rout.

Thushara hit a very useful 44, inclusive of seven boundaries, and was ably supported by Kualsekara, who scored a 25-run cameo after being dropped by Rohit Sharma at an individual score of 13.

Praveen then ended the frustration by dismissing both batsmen in the 34th over.

Harbhajan Singh then made it 122 for 9 when he had Ajantha Mendis caught and bowled for no score.

Dilhara Fernando was the last to go, caught by Kohli off Harbhajan for 12.

Australia set to boycott ICC Champions Trophy 2008

Despite the International Cricket Council (ICC) giving Champions Trophy security the all clear on Tuesday, players from the defending champions, Australia, are set to boycott the upcoming One-day tournament, Australian newspapers were reporting early Wednesday.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled for September 12-28 in troubled Pakistan and ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat claimed on Tuesday in London that safety and security was -satisfactory- after a meeting with officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

However, attempts by an ICC delegation attempted to address Cricket Australia's (CA) concerns over player safety on Friday appear to have failed.

According to The Australian newspaper, Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) chief executive Paul Marsh, who was at Friday's meeting, said the powerful player union could not support Australia's participation in the event.

The ACA has discussed the situation with its executive and our position is we can't recommend to our players they should tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy,- Marsh told The Australian newspaper.

We feel for the Pakistan Cricket Board and the people of Pakistan but it is the job of the ACA to make recommendations to our members based on whether it is safe to tour.

Unfortunately in this case we don't believe it is safe.

The Herald-Sun reported that CA spokesman Peter Young CA spokesman Peter Young had said the governing body was awaiting an official ICC report from meetings with other concerned nations - England, South Africa and New Zealand - before making a public announcement.

It said CA chairman Creagh O'Connor, chief executive James Sutherland and ICC president David Morgan held urgent talks in Beijing on Tuesday.

ICC officials were scheduled to meet in Dubia on Wednesday to discuss the prestigious tournament, with all matches scheduled to be played in Karachi and Lahore.

One option is to switch the event to Sri Lanka, but time is short and that country has its own security concerns. Australia controversially postponed a full tour of Pakistan earlier this year due to the security situation.

Pakistan is fighting Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in its northwestern tribal regions bordering Afghanistan and a string of deadly suicide bomb attacks over the past year have killed more than 1000 people.

This week there were warnings of further suicide attacks in Lahore and Karachi, the cities that will host the Champions Trophy matches.

Live cricket score of India vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI in Idea Cup 2008 | Watch Cricket Scorecard

Jolted by the humiliating defeat in the series opener, India may opt to shuffle their struggling batting line-up as they go into the second one-dayer against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on Wednesday hoping to find a way to regain their winning touch. After losing the Test series, the Indians made a poor start to the one-dayers by losing the first game by eight wickets and it will need a far more inspiring performance by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men to reverse their fortunes.

The absence of Virender Sehwag, who has been ruled out of the series because of an injury, has come as a big blow for the Indians who have been forced to have a re-look at the batting order. The Indian think tank is now toying with the idea of shuffling the batting order for the crucial second game of the five-match series.

Idea Cup ODI Series 2008 Preview | India vs Sri Lanka ODI Series Preview

Sri Lanka and India go head to head in a five match ODI series from tomorrow. The first two matches are day games that will be played in Dambulla while the next three matches are day night games to played in the Premdasa Stadium in Colombo.

Live Scorecard

Sri Lanka seem to have tabs on the Indian team having come up on top in the recent encounters as they beat them in the recent three test series and also the Asia Cup. With mystery spinner Mendis and the great Muralitharan in their ranks, they are well set to dominate the upcoming ODI series as well.

India on the other hand have to find many answers. Both their test and ODI batting line-ups have failed against the Lankan spinners and they are desperate to break the shackles. Yuvraj Singh warmed up with a masterly 172 in the only practice match, but the fact remains that there were hardly any serious bowlers in that game.

The Indians will also miss the experience of Sachin Tendulkar at the top who will miss his third consecutive ODI series due to injury. He had earlier missed the Kitply cup and the Asia cup too. But there is some other good news as coach Gary Kirsten will be joining the team before the first match begins.

Michael Vaughan steps down as England captain

Michael Vaughan has resigned as England captain following the series defeat against South Africa, which was sealed by the five-wicket loss at Edgbaston on Saturday.

The decision was announced during a hastily arranged press conference at Loughborough even though yesterday evening Vaughan said he "would let the dust" settle on the defeat.

Paul Collingwood has also stood down as one-day captain, meaning that England will announce a new captain for both forms of the game on Monday. The frontrunner is Kevin Pietersen, who is a fixture in both teams. Collingwood is currently serving a four-match suspension for a slow over-rate.

An emotional Vaughan said he felt the time was right to go and will take some time out of the game and won't play in the final Test at The Oval, though he remains available for selection for future England contests.

"It's the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but also the easiest," said Vaughan. "I put my heart and soul into the job but if I kept on going my career could have come to an abrupt end. I think this decision will prolong my career.

"I thought it might be time to go in New Zealand, where my body was working well but my mind was not working well. I will always cherish the support I've had, but this is a weight off my shoulders.

"I had every ambition to lead the England team to the next Ashes Series but as England captain I feel I've run out of steam," he added. "I believe that the best thing for the team is to embark on a new direction under a new captain.

"I also believe the best thing for me is to try and get back to being best batsmen I can be. I'll still have all the experience and knowledge to pass on and I hope to be a valuable player for both my county and the England team.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans who have always been so supportive and have provided a huge inspiration to me as captain. A captain is only as good as his teams and I've been fortunate enough to captain some terrific players and great blokes."

It brings an end to Vaughan's 51-match run as captain, four games short of becoming England's long-serving leader, although his 26 victories makes him, statistically, the most successful captain.

"He's led from the front and always led with integrity and honesty. He's been the best possible ambassador for the England cricket team," said managing director Hugh Morris.

However, the pressure on Vaughan has been growing in recent months despite back-to-back series victories against New Zealand. The series loss to South Africa is England's third in five series, dating back to the 1-0 reversal against India last summer. They then lost by the same margin in Sri Lanka before losing the first Test against New Zealand in Hamilton. Vaughan led a shake-up of the team by dropping Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison and England hit back to take the series, but the performances were not convincing.

Adding to the stress on Vaughan has been his own lack of runs. He has made 40 in five innings against South Africa, consistently being troubled by the pace bowlers, and his last ten Test have produced just one century and an average of 22.

He took on the role against South Africa in 2003, following Nasser Hussain's resignation which also came after an Edgbaston Test. His first Test in charge, at Lord's, was a thumping innings defeat, but he subsequently secured victories at Trent Bridge and The Oval as England shared the series.

The defeats in the past two weeks at Headingley and Edgbaston were the first time he has lost back-to-back Tests and a hallmark of his reign as captain was how England could bounce back from defeats. His finest moment was the 2005 Ashes victory, although he was also at the helm for historic away successes against West Indies in 2004 and South Africa in 2005.

India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test Match, Galle, 4th day - India rout Sri Lanka in second Test to level series

India made amends for the Colombo debacle by trouncing Sri Lanka by 170 runs within four days to level the three-match Test series 1-1 in Galle on Sunday.

After setting Sri Lanka a target of 307, Harbhajan Singh (4 for 51) and Ishant Sharma (3 for 20) bundled out the home team for a paltry 136 on a dramatic fourth day's play which saw as many as 16 wickets fall.

It was a remarkable comeback by the Indians who were beaten comprehensively by an innings and 239 runs in the first Test in Colombo.

The teams now return to Colombo for the series decider beginning on August 8.

For Sri Lanka, Thilan Samaraweera (67 not out) stood tall amid the ruins but apart from Tillakaratne Dilshan (38), none of the Sri Lankan batsmen could offer any resistance.

India could add only 69 runs to their overnight score of 200 for four before they collapsed, their last five wickets falling for just 14 runs in the second essay.

For the hosts, Ajantha Mendis finished with four wickets in the second innings to complete his first match haul of 10 wickets in just his second Test match.

After setting the hosts a stiff target of 307, India's pace duo of Ishant and Zaheer Khan mowed down the Lankan top order as the pitch in the Galle International Stadium suddenly sprang to life.

In fact, by the time Sri Lanka's score reached double digit in the fourth over, the hosts lost the wickets of in-form Malinda Warnapura (0), dependable Kumar Sangakkara (5) and batting mainstay and captain Mahela Jayawardene (5).

Both Ishant and Zaheer struck the perfect line and length to make life difficult for the Lankans. Ishant induced an edge from Warnapura with his third delivery and in the next over, Zaheer scalped Sangakkara with a leg-cutter as VVS Laxman took his second catch in the slips.

Jayawardene's stay too was cut short as he cut an Ishant delivery straight to Rahul Dravid at point and Sri Lanka found themselves in a hole as they went into lunch at 24 for three.

On resumption, Harbhajan trapped Michael Vandort (10) but Thilan Samaraweera () and Tillakaratne Dilshan (38) then decided to bail Sri Lanka out of the rut.

Despite the pressure, the duo were in positive frame of mind as they remained cautious but did not err in punishing loose deliveries -- all along ensuring that there was no further damage in this session.

The Indians grew desperate for a breakthrough and Ishant bowled a fiery spell but initially without luck. The lanky Delhi pacer finally had his man when he sent down a steep rising delivery that kissed Dilshan's blade before nestling into Dinesh Karthik's gloves. At that stage, Sri Lanka found themselves at 113 with the top half of the batting order cooling their heels in the pavilion.

Samaraweera and Prasanna Jayawardene (4) thwarted the Indian attack even though runs were not easy to come by with the pacers, especially Ishant, bending their back.

Jayawardene was ruled leg before by umpire Billy Doctrove but the decision was reviewed and eventually upturned, much to bowler Harbhajan's dismay. The offie, however, had the last laugh as Jayawardene finally top-edged one to Sourav Ganguly who took a well-judged catch in the deep.

Harbhajan dealt another blow by trapping Chaminda Vaas for a duck and removed Ajantha Mendis (2) as well while captain Anil Kumble returned Nuwan Kulasekara and Muttiah Muralitharan to drop curtains on the Sri Lankan innings.

Earlier, India did manage to set the hosts a victory target of 307 runs but being all out for 269 meant the match was not yet beyond Sri Lanka's reach.

Overnight batsmen Sourav Ganguly (16) and Laxman (13) began well but before they could really get their eyes in, Ajantha Mendis struck, trapping the stylish Hyderabadi with a trademark carrom ball to peg India back.

Dinesh Karthik (20) made his intention clear as he went about the task of scoring with a positive outlook. Hitting Muralitharan and Mendis over the ropes gave him some confidence but his knock was nipped just when it was about to bloom. In fact, India were in for a double jolt in the 70th over of the innings when Murali first foxed Karthik who went for a six only to hole out in the deep and five balls later, Ganguly stepped out only to miss the line and see Prasanna Jayawardene doing a smart job behind the stump.

The Indian tail did not wag for long with Mendis removing Kumble (2) and Harbhajan (11) to register his first match haul of 10 wickets.

England vs South Africa, 3rd Test, Edgbaston, 4th day - Smith guides South Africa to series victory

Graeme Smith plundered a fighting 154 not out to lead his South Africa team to a five-wicket victory over England that clinched the Test series at Edgbaston on Saturday.

South Africa, set 281 to win the third Test and with it the four-match series after they went 1-0 up at Headingley, reached 283 for five in fading light on day four after the pendulum had swung both ways.

Mark Boucher hit 45 in a crucial stand of 112 with his skipper.

The Proteas claimed their first series win in England since 1965, though they did not play international cricket from 1970 to 1991 because of the country's isolation. They surrendered series leads in 1994, 1998 and 2003.

England had gone six years without losing a Test series at home until India won in 2007 and now they have lost their second at home in the last three.

Captain Smith was a doubt coming in to the match because of a back injury but elected to play with pain-killing tablets to ease his discomfort. His 16th Test century, scored in 246 balls, and fourth against England steered his team home.

BRIGHT START

South Africa started brightly when reaching 65 for no loss but they slumped to 93 for four.

AB de Villiers' stand of 78 with Smith settled his team's nerves as they closed on their target. He was eventually caught at slip off spinner Monty Panesar for 27.

Smith batted fluently throughout, though he did enjoy moments of fortune. When on 74, he played no stroke to a ball from Panesar that turned square and would have hit middle stump but umpire Aleem Dar saved him.

On 79 he should have been run out when Ian Bell, standing over the wickets, failed to catch a throw bounced in from wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose. Smith was yards short.

His luck continued when on 85. Replays suggested he got a deflection off his glove from Panesar to Ambrose, but half-hearted appeals from England failed to convince Dar to send him to the pavilion.

Next ball Smith chose to be more aggressive and swept towards the midwicket boundary where James Anderson was fielding, but the ball bounced once before it reached him.

Earlier, Friday's batting hero Paul Collingwood took his overnight century on to 135 before he was the last man out as England lost their last three wickets for two runs.

Ryan Sidebottom (22), at least, did put up some fight with his eighth-wicket partnership of 65 with Collingwood. Morne Morkel finished with 4-97.

The fourth Test, now a dead game, starts at The Oval on Thursday.

India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Galle, 3rd day - India bat themselves to a strong position

A spirited India tilted the balance of the second cricket Test in their favour by taking an overall lead of 237 runs to push Sri Lanka on the backfoot at close on the third day in Galle on Saturday.

The visitors first dismissed the hosts for 292 to snatch a vital 37-run lead with Harbhajan Singh (6/102) playing a key role and then gave a solid batting display to reach a comfortable 200 for four when play was called off early due to bad light.

After two days of ding-dong battle, the Indians have now put themselves in a position to push for a series-levelling victory after being trounced by an innings and 239 runs in the first Test in Colombo.

Sourav Ganguly and the stylish VVS Laxman were at the crease at stumps without having opened their accounts on an absording day's play which saw nine wickets fall.

With two full days left in the match, the Indians will now seek to take a substantial lead and hope to polish off the islanders quickly in the fourth innings when the track at the Galle International stadium was expected to deteriorate.

The day unfolded perfectly for the tourists as Harbhajan completed his 22nd five-wicket haul to bring Sri Lanka's first innings to an end just at the stroke of lunch. The off-spinner was ably supported by captain Anil Kumble who bagged three wickets.

Mahela Jayawardene was the top scorer for the home team with a responsible 86 as they lost the remaining five wickets for the addition of 77 runs.

The Indians again got off to a solid start with the dashing Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir putting on 90 runs for the opening wicket to provide the platform for a big innings.

Sehwag scored a brisk 50 off 52 balls before falling to paceman Chaminda Vaas with Tillakaratne Dilshan taking a smart catch at the cover region.

Gambhir (74) and Dravid, who has not been in the best of forms, took the score to 144 before 'mystery' spinner Ajantha Mendis struck for the hosts by castling Gambhir with a gem of a delivery.

The Indians could have been in a more commanding position had they not lost Dravid (44) and Sachin Tendulkar (31) in quick succession in the fag end of the day.

The experienced Vaas accounted for Tendulkar as he induced an edge and Prasanna Jayawardene made no mistake behind the stumps.

Dravid was then adjudged leg before to Muttiah Muralitharan by the third umpire after the hosts opted to call for a review. Dravid appeared disappointed as he walked back to the pavilion.

From a comfortable 200 for two, the Indians slipped to 200 for four but still had a good control on the game.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 215 for 5, Jayawardene resisted the Lankan innings from falling apart completely.

Just when it appeared the Sri Lankans would manage a sizeable lead in the first innings, the Sri Lankan skipper edged an Anil Kumble delivery to wicket keeper Dinesh Kaarthick, who did not make any mistake in gathering the ball.

Jayawardene, who made 86 in 188 balls, with the help of 10 fours, also shared a 63-run partnership with wicketkeeper batsman Prasanna Jayawardene to help the Islanders bridge the deficit..

Kumble plucked three wickets in tandem with Harbhajan Singh, who added two more scalps to his yesterday's tally of four exploiting the turning nature of the wicket.

Once Jayawardene returned to the pacilion, Ajantha Mendis was trapped leg before wicket off Kumble without scoring and Muttiah Muralitharan followed suit being caught by Sourav Ganguly off Harbhajan.

Prasanna, who was lucky to survive an appeal for catch by Rahul Dravid as soon as the play began, finally succumbed to the menacing Harbhajan.

The turbanator got his fifth wicket of the Sri Lankan innings when he forced the batsman to scoop a straight forward catch to VVS Laxman at backward short leg.

On an earlier occasion, the leg break of Kumble on the middle stump line drew Prasanna forward and he jabbed off the outer edge of the bat quite low in front of Dravid. The third umpire declared him not out.
