The great Indian demolishers

Gautam Gambhir and Sehwag gave India a perfect start adding 70 for the first wicket. India lost Gambhir, Dravid and Laxman quickly and were in strife at 163-4. But Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly saved the day with a counter-attacking 142-run stand. Sachin Tendulkar (88 runs) dished out a vintage batting performance, driving on the rise and punching the bowlers back straight and through mid-wicket. He went past Brian Lara's tally for most Test runs and also became the first batsman to surpass 12,000 Test runs. Although he got out to the second new ball, late in the day, his innings had done enough to take India to a position of relative safety.
